I KNOW THERE HAVE ALREADY BEEN HEADCANONS ABOUT EMMA BEING A GOOD SINGER BUT OMG.
I’m still so obsessed with the idea.
- Carstairs are known to be musically inclined and all her life, Emma thought that it didn’t apply to her.
- She couldn’t play any instruments. Her fingers too stubborn to remember the notes and sheet music was beyond her.
- Her and Julian always sang in the car together but she was overly dramatic about it so it was hard to tell if she had a good voice or not
- But now that her and Julian share a room more often, he hears her singing in the bathroom while she’s getting ready in the morning and
holy shit - When she comes out and Julian is just staring at her she’s honestly so baffled
- She at out refuses to sing for anyone else because she still doesn’t think she’s musically inclined and “Singing doesn’t count anyways”
- Julian has a recording of her singing “A Thousand Years” and he honestly tears up a little.
- He knows she doesn’t want anyone to know but he sends it to Jem
and Jem is floored - When he comes over next, he has a violin and asks her to help him finish this song inspired by the Carstairs family line
- Next thing you know, they are together in the library for hours on end and her voice perfectly matches the music coming from the violin
- It’s so lovely and the music is so tragic
- One by one the Blackthorns come in and silently listen to the tragedy that became the Carstairs family
- And at the end, the song lifts and though there had been tragedies along the way, they have been lifted by the good now.
- Nobody claps though the song was beautiful. It had surpassed clapping and they didn’t want to tear the moment away from the two Carstairs.
- Jem and Emma hug for a long time after. Connected now by more than just friendship and a family name.
- Emma is still private about singing but with Jem
and Julianshe finally lets music tell the stories of death and loss and love and burgeoning happiness. - The Carstairs live on and grow in numbers but they never forget and because of that, they are all closer than ever as a family.
